Blue board and drywall are not the same, though they are similar building materials. Here are the key differences:
Blue board (also called plasterboard) is specifically designed as a base for veneer plaster. It has special blue paper facing that creates a strong bond with plaster. It’s used when you want a plaster finish rather than the typical painted drywall finish.
Regular drywall (also called gypsum board or sheetrock) has gray or white paper facing and is designed to be finished with joint compound, taped, sanded, and then painted or wallpapered.
The main differences are:
- Their intended finish (plaster vs. joint compound)
- The paper facing (blue vs. white/gray)
- Absorption properties (blue board is less absorbent)
- Installation process and final appearance
Blue board is used mostly for a specific type of finish, while regular drywall is much more common in residential construction.
